Young Guns Added To The Red Bull Nightshift Mix

Conditions are looking balmy for this Saturday’s Red Bull Nightshift with Jordy Smith at North Beach Durban.

The East Coast’s warm winter has its advantages with a host of SA’s best, both young and more experienced surfers, in the line-up. Young guns Chad Du Toit, Shaun Joubert, Slade Prestwich and Michael February round up Saturday’s line-up to bring an exciting outlook on the event.

Durban local Chad du Toit has got some tricks up his sleeve for the event: “I’ve been working on some new grabs and rotations. I’m aiming to stick a Kerrupt or two. I’ll leave the backhand superman to Jordy.”

More technical, powerful aerial surfing is exactly where the sport is headed and what new generation surfers are aiming for.

Red Bull Nightshift is set to rock North Beach with Shadowclub and City Bowl Mizers there to entertain the crowd after the surfers are done with their impressive aerial antics in the water.

The line-up now has a firm local flavour, as a few changes have been made in lieu of sponsor commitments and injuries. The confirmed line-up is as follows:

Jordy Smith
Travis Logie
David Weare
Ricky Basnett
Dan Redman
Rudy Palmboom
Chad Du Toit
Shaun Joubert
Mikey February
Slade Prestwich

Red Bull Nightshift is in proud partnership with Oakley, O’Neill and ASP Africa.

WP surfers and SUP'pers clean up at SA SUP Champs and Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep

A dedicated group of 46 Western Province long-board surfers and SUP'pers invaded the tropical waters of New Pier in Durban this past weekend and surfed away with a 11 of the 16 trophies.
Top of the pops was our very own Justin Bing, who completed the first ever double of becoming the SA Stand Up Paddling Champion, following on from his victory in the Open Long-Boarding division a few weeks ago in Victoria Bay. Justin almost grabbed the Long-boarding title at the Durban event too, but just could not find that 2nd winning wave.

Chris Bertish came oh so close with his mechanical type wave selection and execution of his maneuvers. Dylan Frick will have to be patient with his 3rd place and wait another year, while Pete Petersen made both the Open and Legends finals.

Silver medalist at the World Champs, Penny Stemmet proved too good for her sister Tammy and Melkbos lady Michelle Fourie as well as Chelsea who did us proud with her 4th in the Ladies SUP final, as did Raylin who came 3rd in the Ladies Long-Boarding.

The old man of the sea (Green Ninja) sneaked the Legends SUP division as well as the Long-boarding titles, but that was mostly due to the opposition having wheel-chair and zimmer-frame difficulties in the sand. Youngster, Matthew van de Linde showed future promise and swooped the Junior SUP title from Dylan, Ozzy and Matthew Maxwell.
A superb event that was put together by Paul and Pat from Nerve Events – well done folks!

Surfers Announced For Red Bull Nightshift Durban

Local and international surfers make up the Red Bull Nightshift field.

Seven surfers have been confirmed to join Jordy Smith in Durban for the second edition of Red Bull Nightshift on Saturday 30 June. The event, a tow-at surfing demonstration, set to take place at North Beach at night under floodlights, has proven to be the most anticipated speciality event on the local surfing calendar.

Joining Jordy at the event will be the current ASP 4th ranked surfer Adriano De Souza from Sao Paulo, Brazil and 26th ranked Kolohe Andino from San Clemente, California. The South African contingent includes Rudy Palmboom, David Weare, Travis Logie, Dan Redman and Ricky Basnett.

Dan Redman missed the event last year due to an ankle injury, but is stoked to be part of this year's event. "I'm amped for Nightshift," said Dan on hearing his inclusion into the event. "It's going to be great getting towed into some peaks at North Beach under the floodlights with Jordy and the crew. Plus I'm sure we'll have a little party afterwards."

The event will showcase Jordy and crew performing some groundbreaking and innovative aerial moves under the spotlights in the North Beach arena. Last year the event culminated with a spectacular 'Superman' move performed by Jordy in front of the crowds gathered on the water's edge.

Local bands Shadowclub and City Bowl Mizers will then kick off after the surfing for a party on the beach, before everyone heads over to Joe Kools.

The event can be tracked on Twitter via the #RBNightshift hashtag, and you can join the Facebook Nightshift event page.

Red Bull Nightshift is supported by O'Neill and Oakley. The event has been rated as an ASP Speciality Event.

Record Number of Entries for Durban Surf Carnival

The Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel starts on Friday the 15th at 07h30 at Durban’s New Pier and ends on Sunday 17 June. A record 130 Longboard, Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) and Waveski competitors from all over South Africa have entered into this year’s event and each one will be looking to take full advantage of the beautiful weather and excellent surf conditions predicted for this prestigious event.

“The Durban beachfront has so much to offer and thank goodness we have a couple of contest sites to choose from otherwise we may have had to add an extra day, something we will definitely be looking at doing next year," said Durban Surf Carnival organizer, Paul Godwin of Nerve Events.

The event will take place in Durban for the next three years after moving from Scottburgh on the KZN south coast where it was created in 2003; it is expected to develop into Durban’s premier water-sports event.

The Surf Carnival has been running for ten years and relocating the event to Durban was the cherry on the top for the organisers, sponsors and competitors. The event is endorsed by the City of Durban, "Surf City", and keeps in line with the goal of marketing Durban as the chosensurfing destination for all ocean-user groups.

The Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel sees ladies and men’s divisions in all three disciplines being contested with a total of nine titles up for grabs.

Stand Up Paddle South Africa (SUPSA) and Waveski SA have both sanctioned this years event held at New Pier in Durban and winners in the Men's and Women’s open divisions will be crowned South African National Champions.

Winners of the SUP contest will be eligible for squad selection to represent South African at the forthcoming 2013 International Surfing Association Stand Up Paddle World Championships.  Stand Up Paddle South Africa is affiliated to Surfing South Africa.

The event will also offer added surprises and action for contestants and the general public who can get involved in the ‘Snapshot’ photo competition and free surfing clinics.

The Mad Dog Surf School which has become a regular feature of the event will be run by Shaun Sellman and his experienced team; free surfing lessons will be open to all interested members of the public on Saturday and Sunday.

Sponsors of the event include the City of Durban - Durban “the warmest place to be, Jeep Apparel and Independent on Saturday.

Support sponsors are Red Bull, Thule, Naish SUP, Natural Curve Surfboards, Nestle Pure Life Water, Bokomo, Container Conversions, Mad Dog Surf School, Maisch Fins, Nescafe, Pro Class Wetsuits,Thermo Plastic Concepts & Equipment (TCE), Carling Black Label and Nando’s.

Durban Warms up for the Surf Carnival

Following the weekend's chilly weather, Durban is busy warming up ahead of the Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel which will be taking place at New Pier from 15 to 17 June 2012. Consisting of a longboard, Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) and wave ski event, the surf carnival has attracted the country's best wave riders to compete. Members of the public will also have the opportunity to take part in free 'learn to surf lessons' which will be taking place on the beach over the weekend.

The Mad Dog Surf School will be providing surfing lessons to anyone that is interested in learning how to surf. Shaun Sellman and his team of professional surfing instructors will be on hand on Saturday and Sunday from 10h00 to offer advice and a lesson. “The public can expect to stand up and catch a wave in the first hour, that is my guarantee,” commented Shaun Sellman, who went on to say, “all you need to do is bring your costumes and a towel, it's free so come down to give it a go and see if you enjoy it”.

With all of the competitors moving onto the beachfront this week in preparation for the contest, there is a lot of last minute practicing going down and the event area is also under construction. The carnival will be officiated by popular Durban surfing personality and administrator Anne Wright.

“I’m really looking forward to running an event of this stature especially with the different disciplines. We are usually blessed with great waves at this time of the year so with the beautiful weather and excellent surf conditions, the surfers and spectators can look forward to an awesome three days at New Pier,” commented Wright.

One of the leading contenders for the SUPSA SA champs is Brandon Ribbink who said, “I am ready for the Durban Surf Carnival, winter in KZN always has great surf conditions so I have had good opportunities to prepare for this year's event. As far as the change of venue from the south coast to Durban goes, I really think that it is being hosted at the perfect venue, it’s much better.  I am also glad that the event has been moved forward this year to June as the waves are bound to be consistent.”

Another National title event will be battled out in the Waveski SA Open Event. South Africa’s top riders are expected to attend with last year's Carnival Waveski Champion Andre Burger (EP) ready to defend his title, another top contender is internationally ranked Doug Copeland of Border who is a 2 times SA Masters champion, and currently ranked 8th in the World.

“The competitors are ecstatic about being able to compete at New Pier, they are also very grateful to the locals for their patience over the three days and we have a great contingent of local surfers taking part too," said Doug Copeland.

The Durban Surf Carnival showcases lesser known wave riding sports and has been endorsed by the City of Durban, "Surf City", with its ongoing goal to market Durban as a surfing destination for all ocean-user groups.

The event will offer other prizes to members of the public taking part in the ‘Snapshot’ photo competition.

The Waveski event is sanctioned  by the SA Waveski Surfing Association.

Sponsors include the City of Durban - Durban “the warmest place to be”, Jeep Apparel, and the Independent on Saturday

Support sponsors are Red Bull, Thule, Naish SUP, Natural Curve Surfboards, Nestle Pure Life Water, Bokomo, Container Conversions, Mad Dog Surf School, Maisch Fins, Nescafe, Pro Class Wetsuits, Thermo Plastic Concepts & Equipment (TCE), Carling Black Label and Nando’s.

Red Bull Nightshift heads to Jordy Smith's hometown.

After an inspiring event last year, Red Bull Nighshift heads to Durban.

Last year saw the inaugural Red Bull Nightshift take place on Camps Bay beach, and what a huge success it was. A crowd of an estimated 10,000 people arrived to watch Jordy and his best mates get towed into waves and flung into the sky under the spotlights in this tow-at demonstration surfing event. Massive moves were pulled off at full speed behind the Waverunner by all of the invited surfers, silhouetted against the night sky by spotlights and hundreds of flash cameras going off simultaneously.

This year the event moves to the Durban beachfront and the iconic piers at North Beach. The piers and the close-access beachfront make it a perfect venue for mounting spotlights to light up the night sky for Jordy and friends. The event is set for Saturday 30 June 2012, will kick off at about 3PM, and will go late on into the night.

"I'm really pumped up," said Jordy of the upcoming event. "It's going to be bigger and better than last year, and this time we're taking it to my home town, Durban."

After the surfing, Shadowclub and Durban locals City Bowl Mizers and be jamming well into the night before the party moves over to Joe Kools.

Perfect waves expected for Durban Surf Carnival

Going for a Walk - Jeep Team Rider Ross Lahana (WC) is another likely contender for the Open Longboarding division at the Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel . Ross was a finalist at last year’s Surf Carnival. Image Courtesy Paul Godwin/Nerve Events

With only two weeks to go before South Africa’s top watermen and women descend on Durban, there is no shortage of talent as the entries continue to fly in for this much-anticipated event. The Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel is set to take place at New Pier from 15 to 17 June 2012 and given the recent excellent surf, the organizers are expecting perfect winter waves for the event. The Durban Surf Carnival consists of a Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) event, a Waveski contest as well as a Longboard surfing championships.

All of the divisions are filling up quickly and at this stage it appears as though the Western Cape is going to dominate by numbers in the SUP and Longboard events, with a major showing of Eastern Cape surfers in the Wave ski division. The weather predictions show favourable conditions for the event with several cold fronts heading up the east coast, this usually means perfect winter swell conditions for Durban’s protected beachfront.

Due to the high number of entries, the organisers have the option of utilising split venues for this event.

“The Durban Surf Carnival will provide a perfect opportunity for members of the public to watch the cream of the Stand Up Paddleboarding, Longboarding and Waveski surfers in action,” cites Paul Godwin of Nerve Events.

“The Competitors are ecstatic about being able to compete at New Pier, they are also very grateful to the locals for their patience over the three days and we have a great contingent of local surfers taking part too."

Top SUP surfers taking part include the 2011 SUP Carnival Champion Brandon Ribbink (Berea, Durban) and Penny Stemmet (WP) who surfed for SA earlier in the year in the ISA SUP World Champs.

Longboarders tipped to excel include Josch Schmeltzer and Brad Weare (Durban) both finalists in this year's SALSA SA Longboarding Championships and the 2012 SA Masters Longboard Champion and Jeep Apparel Team rider Dylan Macleod (EP) will also be in the running for the Open Longboard crown.  Multiple Surfing Champion Craig Daniel (Bluff) is amongst the favorites expected to dominate in the Over 35 long boarding division.

The Durban Surf Carnival showcases lesser known wave riding sports and has been endorsed by the City of Durban, "Surf City", with its ongoing goal to market Durban as a surfing destination for all ocean-user groups.

The event will offer other surprises and action for the contestants and the general public who can get involved in the ‘Snapshot’ photo competition and a free surfing clinic.

The Mad Dog Surf School which has become a regular feature of the event will be run by Shaun Sellman and his experienced crew will be giving free surfing lessons open to all members of the public.

The Waveski event is sanctioned  by the SA Waveski Surfing Association.

Sponsors include the City of Durban - Durban “the warmest place to be”, Jeep Apparel, and Independent on Saturday

Support Sponsors are Red Bull, Thule, Naish SUP, Natural Curve Surfboards, Nestle Pure Life Water, Bokomo. Container Conversions, Mad Dog Surf School, Maisch Fins, Nescafe, Pro Class Wetsuits, Thermo Plastic Concepts & Equipment (TCE), Carling Black Label and Nando’s.
