First SA Stand Up Surfing Champs for Surf City

Last year’s SUP Carnival Champion Brandon Ribbink (Morningside, Durban) will be looking to retain his title at the Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel this year and has been putting in a lot of practice for this year's event. Ribbink and a host of top SUP competitors have set their sights on being selected for the ISA SUP World Champs for 2013 as the Durban Surf Carnival will select the South African team for this world title event.

First SA Stand Up Surfing Champs for Surf City

From humble beginnings that started with a few pioneer Stand Up Paddleboarders back in 2007, the sport of Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Surfing has exploded on the South African Scene especially in the Western Cape. As part of the Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel the second SUPSA (Stand Up Paddle South Africa) SA Wave Riding Champs will form an important part of the festival which takes place from the 15th to 17th June 2012 at the New Pier in Durban.

SUP essentially requires the surfer to remain standing all the time and when riding a wave the surfer uses the paddle for direction and balance; the surfers is judged overall on elements of Shortboard and Longboard surfing maneuvers.

The very first SUPSA (Stand Up Paddle South Africa) SA Champs took place in Cape Town last year; organizers of the Durban Surf Carnival have already received over 20 entries from surfers in the Western Cape.

The local Durban SUP community are looking forward to having the upper hand of local knowledge and last year's Carnival Champion Brandon Ribbink (Morningside, Durban) and top SUP surfer Grant Roberts (Durban) will both be eyeing the open title and the opportunity to stand a chance to be selected for the 2013 ISA World Surfing Games.

“The standard of SUP surfing from 2007 to today is unbelievable! We all started out on 12ft boards and now most of the guys are riding boards in the 8 to 9ft range which makes the surfing extreme and the moves spectacular,” commented Paul Godwin from Nerve Events.

Stand Up Paddle South Africa (SUPSA) is proud to be associated with the Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel.  South Africa’s elite Stand Up Paddle Surfers from around the country will converge on the Durban beachfront this winter to showcase the sport at the iconic New Pier, the event is a SUPSA sanctioned contest and the SUPSA objective is to crown the winners as the South African SUP Surf National Champion in the Men and Women's open divisions.
The winners will be eligible for squad selection to represent South African at the forthcoming 2013 International Surfing Association Stand Up Paddle World Championships.  Stand Up Paddle South Africa is affiliated to Surfing South Africa. Entry forms can be downloaded from http://nerveevents.blogspot.com/   For any SUPSA related queries, please contact Brigette on 083 225 2052 or secretary@supsa.org.za

The Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel also features a top rated Longboard and Waveski event as well as the the ‘Snapshot’ Photographic competition. Surfing Carnival Gears up for Surf City

After nine years on the south coast, the popular Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnival waves a fond farewell to Scottburgh as it ventures northwards to the internationally renowned surf break of New Pier from 15 to 17 June 2012. Surf City’s Golden Mile is the new home for this multi discipline event for the next three years.

"Thanks to the City of Durban we have been able to bring this hugely popular event to Durban “the warmest place to be”. The event which showcases lesser known wave riding sports has been endorsed by the City and its ongoing goal to market Durban as a surfing destination for all water users. This event will also help in unifying and creating solidarity between the different surfing codes which utilise the ocean," commented event organizer Paul Godwin from Nerve Events.

The move to Durban did suffer one casualty in that the annual kite surfing event  had to be cancelled. This was due to the fact that the Durban Beachfront is not ideally suited for this high energy extreme sport due to the wind direction and the time of the year which normally sees lighter winds prevailing.

“The event has simply got too big for Scottburgh Beach and the timing always guaranteed unpredictable surf which was a plus for some and a bone jarring experience for others, moving the Durban Surf Carnival to “Surf City” will most likely give the competitors a much more friendly and inviting ocean which often sees New Pier at its best as we settle into winter,” added Godwin.

Godwin went on to say, “New Pier offers such a good contest wave that the sports we showcase, which will be SA’s top Longboarders, the South African SUP Surf National Championships  and the  South African Waveski Open Championships will enjoy a wonderful platform of exposure."

The event will offer other surprises and action for the contestants and the general public who can get involved in the ‘Snapshot’ photo competition and a free surfing clinic.

Steve Uppink of Jeep Apparel said, “We at Jeep apparel are very excited to have this event move to Durban. These sporting disciplines are very limited in exposure and sponsorships and by hosting all of the disciplines together in one carnival it's now possible for us all to experience and enjoy them. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the City of Durban for agreeing to host the exciting new Durban Surf Carnival as well as their generous contribution and support of the event. We would also like to thank Paul and Pat from Nerve Events for their efforts in putting it together and making it possible. It will be a really eventful weekend in Durban over the Youth Day Weekend and we would like to encourage everyone to come down to the Durban Surf Carnival."

Early entries in to the SUP event include current 2012  SA Team member  Penny Stemmet (WP), current Legends SA Champion Peter Peterson (WP) and last years SUP Carnival Champion Brandon Ribbink (KZN). A massive contingent of Western Province surfers have confirmed their attendance in all three disciplines.

Stand Up Paddle South Africa (SUPSA) is proud to be associated with the Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel.  South Africa’s elite Stand Up Paddle Surfers from around the country will converge on Durban this winter to showcase the sport at the iconic New Pier, the event is a SUPSA sanctioned contest and the SUPSA objective is to crown the winners as the South African SUP Surf National Champion in the Men and Women's open divisions. The winners will be eligible for squad selection to represent South African at the forthcoming 2013 International Surfing Association Stand Up Paddle World Championships.  Stand Up Paddle South Africa is affiliated to Surfing South Africa. Entry forms can be downloaded from http://nerveevents.blogspot.com/ To be in contention to represent SA one must be a paid up member of SUPSA.  For any SUPSA related queries, please contact Brigette on 083 225 2052 or secretary@supsa.org.za

Jeep Apparel Team riders Dylan Macleod (EP) and Ross Lahana (WP) are the two early entries in the Open Longboard event and both have a good chance of taking this coveted title. And waveski enthusiast Duran Martin  is the local favourite in the Waveksi championship event.

The ‘Snapshot’ Photographic competition will once again take place and this provides an opportunity for amateur and professional photographers to win fantastic prizes courtesy of Jeep Apparel and the Independent on Saturday newspaper.

The Mad Dog Surf School which has become a regular feature of the event will be run by Shaun Sellman and his experienced crew will be giving free surfing lessons for the public to attend.

The Waveski event is sanctioned  by the SA Waveski Surfing Association.

Sponsors to this event include the City of Durban - Durban “the warmest place to be”, Jeep Apparel, and Independent on Saturday

Liberia Becomes the Ninth ISA Member Nation From the African Continent

Liberia is working toward a future removed from its troubled past - and doing so, partly, through surfing.
Eight years removed from its last civil war, the country has a growing tourism industry, part of which circulates around its 350 miles of pristine, white-sand coastline in Western Africa. It was for that reason and the hope of continuing to increase surfing's presence in the country that it applied and was accepted to become the ISA's 71st Member Nation.

The ISA has recently undertaken the goal of growing surfing throughout the continent of Africa.
In March, the ISA sent a representative to Mali to address an audience of national Olympic delegates at the Africa International Sports Convention (CISA). In his presentation, Marcos "Bukao" Esmanhoto, the ISA's Contest Director and an Executive Committee member, outlined the ISA's efforts to develop surfing throughout the continent, touching on the potential social and economic implications of having a blossoming surf scene. Following the presentation, he received a resounding applause from the roomful of representatives from each of the continent's 53 countries.

"At the ISA we are aware of all the good that surfing has done as a social, economic and cultural force for a better world. It's a sport and a lifestyle that breeds opportunity and positive energy for practioners and fans alike," said Fernando Aguerre, the President of the ISA. "We know that surfing can function as a tool, a vehicle, for positive change on several levels. I'm so happy that Liberia has recognized the benefit of surfing and of working with the ISA. We're excited to help them develop the sport in their country."

"I'm happy for Liberia, for its citizens, and of course, I'm happy that surfing has started the 'ride' in Liberia," Aguerre continued. "This is all good news for the peace loving people in that part of Africa."
When Aguerre became president and chairman of the ISA in 1994, the organization had just 31 member nations. He radically altered the face and action of the ISA, aiming to grow its impact and recognition throughout the world. The addition of Liberia brings the total number of member nations to 71, nine of which are from Africa. Along with Liberia, Cape Verde, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Namibia, Senegal, Somalia and South Africa are member nations of the ISA.

Part of the presentation to CISA included the goal to raise the number of ISA member nations on the continent from eight to 15 by the end of 2013. The ISA also hopes to raise its total number of member nations around the world to 100.

While all of the current African ISA Member Nations have a coastline, with the way surfing has evolved around the increasing popularity of StandUp Paddleboarding (SUP), having a coastline is no longer critical to creating a surf culture. As long as there is a large body of water, surfing and the lifestyle its embodies can prosper.
For instance, Uganda and Niger both have large lakes within their boundaries, which could host SUP and paddleboard races. With the right winds, it's possible that waves can break, much as they do in the Great Lakes, which has helped to generate a surfing scene in Sheboygan, Wisconsin in the United States. The nearest ocean coastline to Sheboygan is nearly 750 miles away.
"The stoke for riding waves continues to expand around the world," Aguerre said. "Liberia's membership is part of a strong push at the ISA to develop the sport of surfing in Africa."

About the International Surfing AssociationThe International Surfing Association (ISA) is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the World Governing Authority for Surfing. It was originally founded as the International Surfing Federation in 1964 and has been running Open Division World Championships since 1964, Junior World Championships since 1980, and Masters World Championships since 2007. The ISA also sanctions the World Kneeboard Titles and the Tandem Surfing World Title, and will hold the World Bodyboard Championship in 2011, and the first World Standup Paddle (SUP) and Paddleboard Championship in 2012.

ISA membership includes the surfing National Governing Bodies of 70 countries on five continents. Its headquarters are located in San Diego, California. It is presided over by Fernando Aguerre (Argentina), first elected President in 1994 in Rio de Janeiro and re-elected seven times since. The ISA's four Vice-Presidents are Alan Atkins (AUS), Karín Sierralta (PER), Debbie Beacham (USA) and Layne Beachley (AUS).

ISAF chooses Kiteboarding for Rio Olympic Games in 2016

Sporting interest story

The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) has confirmed the final event and equipment selections for the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition to be Kiteboarding. After a long discussion with a lot of enthusiasm and support for both sports, ISAF Council voted with a 19 to 17 majority that Kiteboarding will replace Windsurfing for the men's and women's board events in Rio.

ISAF President Göran Petersson stated: "Kiteboarding has proven to us that it is ready to be included into the list of prestigious ISAF Events and it is a fantastic addition to the sailing programme for the 2016 Olympic Games."

Sir Richard Branson, one of the IKAs Olympic Ambassadors and supporters from the very first minute added: “Well we all flew a kite to get kiteboarding in to the Olympics and unbelievably the kite has landed in Rio! Kiteboarding is now an Olympic sport! To celebrate this, myself, my family and a few friends will this week attempt to kite across the English Channel to show off the beauty of kite-surfing.”
In November 2011 an evaluation group was appointed to examine kiteboarding formats with the board events for Rio 2016 defined as 'windsurfing and/or kiteboarding'. The Evaluation Group recommended that kiteboarding be included in the ISAF Event family including the ISAF Sailing World Cup and the ISAF Sailing World Championships. ISAF Council then went one step further when selecting Kiteboarding to be part of the Olympic Sailing Competition in Rio 2016.

IKA Executive Secretary Markus Schwendtner said: "The decision today will change the lives of thousands of kiteboarders that now can live their Olympic dream. The National Sailing Associations will now include kiteboarding into their programs and coach and support the riders to go to the Olympic Qualification events. We never thought we would get this far in such a short time."
Kristin Boese, 9x Kiteboarding World Champion and strong ambassador for the Kiteboarding in the Olympics Campaign concludes: "It was incredible to see that council showed so much support for kiteboarding during yesterday's debate and that alone was very exciting for us. However, we never thought that we were going to stand a chance when it comes to the straight vote between kiteboarding and windsurfing and it was such a huge surprise when the result was announced. I will never forget this moment. I am so grateful for all the hard work the IKA and many others have put into the Kiteboarding in the Olympics campaign.“

The events to be contested at the 2016 Olympic Games are confirmed as:
Men's Kiteboarding
Women's Kiteboarding
Men's One Person Dinghy - Laser
Women's One Person Dinghy - Laser Radial
Men's One Person Dinghy (heavy) - Finn
Men's Two Person Dinghy - 470
Women's Two Person Dinghy - 470
Men's Skiff - 49er
Women's skiff - 49er FX
Mixed Two Person Multihull - Nacra 17

These ten events will be featured in the 2012-2013 ISAF Sailing World Cup which kicks off in Melbourne in December as well as in the ISAF Sailing World Championships in Santander, Spain in 2014.
