RESULTS - Pengelly, Bertish and Bing Win the 2010 South Coast Surf Carnival in Style

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Attention
7 November 2010

Pengelly, Bertish and Bing Win the 2010 South Coast Surf Carnival in Style

Brett Pengelly (Umhlanga), Chris Bertish (Cape Town) and Justin Bing (Cape Town) won the 2010 South Coast Surf Carnival kiteboarding, stand up paddleboarding (SUP) and longboarding events, respectively, at Scottburgh beach yesterday (Sunday, November 7, 2010). Contestable one-metre waves, sunshine and a packed beach set the scene for the finals of the KZN water-sports festival presented by Jeep Apparel and the Independent on Saturday.

“We have had a fantastic weekend for the 2010 South Coast Surf Carnival; the good surf and strong winds saw all disciplines compete with great results in all of the divisions. From Nerve events side we are so grateful for all of the support from our sponsors and members of the public. The beach has been really busy and we look forward to seeing everyone again at the 2011 South Coast Surf Carnival,” commented event organiser from Nerve Events, Paul Godwin.

The trip to KZN proved to be worthwhile for Justin Bing (Noordhoek) who cleaned up in the open longboarding final as well as bagging the only perfect 10 of the contest in an earlier heat. Another out of town longboarder Dylan Macleod (Humewood, PE) placed second ahead of KZN competitors Donald Brierley (Durban) and Justin Maisch (Umzumbe) who placed third and fourth.

There was a major upset in the ladies division with pre-contest favourite and multiple SA champion, Lisa Smith (Sherwood) relegated to fourth place. Top short-board surfer and national team member Sarah Baum (Amanzimtoti) proved her versatility as a wave rider when she took her first major ladies longboarding title ahead of runner up Taryn Kyte (Cape Town) and third placed Traci Phillips (Durban).

Scott Lefevre (Durban) was crowned the junior longboarding champion with Bradd Gilmour (Durban) scooping second spot ahead of Jago England ((Umhlanga) and Damien Stander (Durban North).

Craig Daniel (Bluff) successfully defended his title in the over 35 longboarding final with Grant Gilmour (Durban) taking second place. Richards Bay surfer Fred Le Roux relegated talented Capetonian and popular KFM radio surf reporter Deon Bing into fourth place.

Colin Whitmore (Durban) emerged victorious in the over 50 longboarding final with Dave Hansen (Durban), Hugh Thompson (Durban) and Dave Van Den Berg (Durban) finishing second, third and fourth, respectively.

The stand up paddleboarding (SUP) event proved to be a hit with a bumper number of contestants taking part. The standard of SUP riding was taken to the next level with 360s, huge top turns and re-entries being the order of the day. Chris Bertish (Cape Town) was a well deserving winner having been consistent throughout his heats. Jonathon Rosslind (Cape Town) placed second ahead of local stars Donald Brierly (Durban) and Brandon Ribbink (Morningside).

The kiteboarding competitors enjoyed a strong south westerly on the first day with a north easterly wind for the Sunday finals. The open title went to Brett Pengelly (Umhlanga) with seasoned kiteboarder Rob Chrystal (Umhlanga) taking second; Marc Warner (La Lucia) clinched third place ahead of Lyle Bottcher (Umhlanga) in fourth.

Linda Potts (Kloof) won the ladies division with Stuart Downey (Durban) crowned the junior champion.

The development surfing clinics were well-attended with many youngsters catching their very first waves and getting hooked on the sport of surfing.

The South Coast Surf Carnival is sponsored by Independent on Saturday and Jeep Apparel. Contributing sponsors to the event are:  Island Style, Pick’n Pay Scottburgh, Bilt Surfboards, Thermo Plastic Concepts & Equipment (TCE), Maisch Fins, Nestle Pure Life Water, Natural Curve Surfboards, Bokomo, Ocean 2 Air Kitesurfing, Pro Class Wetsuits, Phatboyz, Carling Black Label.

Perfect Conditions for Longboarders, Kiteboarders and SUP at South Coast

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Attention
6 November 2010

Perfect Conditions for Longboarders, Kiteboarders and SUP at South Coast
Surf Carnival

Textbook perfect conditions greeted competitors on day one (Saturday) of the
South Coast Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel and the Independent on
Saturday at Scottburgh beach on the KZN south coast. Fun one-metre waves,
sunshine, strong offshore winds and clean water set the scene for the
opening rounds of the longboarding, kiteboarding and stand up paddleboarding
(SUP) events.

"All three wave-riding disciplines made the most of the fantastic conditions
on Saturday; there was enough wind for the kiteboarders and decent surf for
the SUP and longboarding competitors as well. We have seen some high scoring
rides and are in for a treat with the finals on today around lunchtime,"
commented South Coast Surf Carnival Contest Director Hugh Thompson.

In the men's open longboarding heats, 2006 South Coast Surf Carnival
champion and former SA Longboarding Champion Dylan McLeod (Humewood, PE)
excelled in the early rounds as did Cape Town star Justin Bing (Noordhoek).
Brad Trickett (Morningside) also won his opening clash.

Perennial favourite and multiple SA champion Lisa Smith (Sherwood) set the
pace in the ladies longboarding division with famous shortboard surfer and
national team member Sarah Baum (Amanzimtoti) rising to the occasion with
some big turns which saw her win her round one tussle. Out of town
longboarder Chelsea van Rooyen (Kommetjie) ousted some of the KZN women in
the earlier heats and looks set to give the others a run for their money
today.

The standard of surfing in the over 35 and over 50 longboarding divisions
was impressive in the wind-affected conditions later in the day. The finals
are bound to be closely contested amongst the country's most experienced
surfers.

Round one of the SUP division saw some outstanding performances from Glen
Thompson (Camps Bay), Brandon Ribbink (Morningside), Gigs Cilliers
(Bloubergstrand) and Chris Bertish (Seapoint) who are amongst the favourites
tipped to win today (Sunday).

The kiteboarders faced difficult launches in the south westerly wind which
gusted up to 40 knots at times. The men's event was dominated by top north
coast competitors Lyle Bottcher (Umhlanga), Brett Pengelly (Durban North),
Rob Crystal (Umhlanga) and Marc Warner (Umhlanga). The ladies and juniors
fared well and are looking forward to today's north easterly wind.

The development surfing clinics were well attended with many youngsters
catching their very first waves and getting hooked on the sport of surfing.
The lessons are free and open to all members of the public again today
(Sunday).

The South Coast Surf Carnival is sponsored by Independent on Saturday and
Jeep Apparel. Contributing sponsors to the event are: Island Style, Pick'n
Pay Scottburgh, Bilt Surfboards, Thermo Plastic Concepts & Equipment (TCE),
Maisch Fins, Nestle Pure Life Water, Natural Curve Surfboards, Bokomo, Ocean

Scottburgh South Coast Surf Carnival to Host Development Surfing Clinic

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Attention
1 November 2010

Scottburgh South Coast Surf Carnival to Host Development Surfing Clinic

The eighth edition of The South Coast Surf Carnival at Scottburgh main beach on 6 and 7 November this year will also be the venue for the carnival’s seventh learn-to-surf development clinic.  The carnival is well known as a premier watersports event, but there is also an opportunity for members of the public to learn how to surf under the guidance of experienced coaches.
Sean Selman, who has run the development clinic for the last two years, explains that “This clinic is for anyone who loves to surf or would like to learn. I can assure you that everyone who participates will surf at least one wave.”
The clinic is free to anyone who is water safe and able to swim in the ocean.  Selman will be assisted by two instructors who were trained by the Umthombo organisation for street children. One of the coaches is Bongani Mathe who has three years’ experience instructing people to surf and is currently working for Ocean Ventures. There is no set time for the clinic to begin or end as that depends on the tides and surf conditions, but Selman and his team will be on the main beach throughout the duration of the carnival to teach the basics to anyone who is keen to learn and all equipment is provided.

In addition to the development surfing element, the South Coast Surf Carnival consists of kiteboarding, longboarding and stand up paddleboarding contests which have attracted the cream of SA’s wave-riding crop to compete.

“It is great that we have been able to include the clinic once again for the event, each year it is well supported and the instructors are passionate about imparting their knowledge of the ocean and the sport of surfing to eager learners,” commented Paul Godwin of Nerve Events.

The South Coast Surf Carnival is sponsored by Independent on Saturday and Jeep Apparel. Contributing sponsors to the event are:  Island Style, Pick’n Pay Scottburgh, Bilt Surfboards, Thermo Plastic Concepts & Equipment (TCE), Maisch Fins, Nestle Pure Life Water, Natural Curve Surfboards, Bokomo, Ocean 2 Air Kitesurfing, Pro Class Wetsuits, Phatboyz, Carling Black Label.

Strong Western Province showing for KZN’s South Coast Surf Carnival

Strong Western Province showing for KZN’s South Coast Surf Carnival

Sunny Scottburgh will once again be the venue for The South Coast Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel and independent on Saturday on 6 and 7 November this year.  It will be the eighth edition of what has become one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the South African watersports calendar.
The quality of the field this year is exciting, with some of the best wave-riders in the country preparing to impress on Scottburgh main beach

“What started with one Cape entry way back in 2005, that being talented longboarder Michael Grendon, has mushroomed into a migration of top competitors from the Cape making the pilgrimage each year to Scottburgh. As an organizer I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Western Cape wave riders for their overwhelming support for the event and wish them luck going into the competition”, commented South Coast Surf Carnival creator Paul Godwin from Nerve Events.

The longboarding, kitesurfing and stand up paddleboarding (SUP) competition will be fierce and include some top competitors from the Western Cape.
The men’s open longboarding event is wide open this year with defending champion Jason Ribbinck out injured. With so many talented longboarders in the field, it will have to be a strong performance to take the title. Western Cape father and son duo Deon and Justin Bing will be top contenders along with former SCSC champion Dylan Mcleod from Port Elizabeth.
Peter Petersen of the Western Cape will be looking to defend his kitesurfing title this year and with perfect conditions and a strong North-Easterly he will face stiff competition from the likes of Gary van Rooyen (also WP) and Rob Chrystal (KZN). Jonathon Rosslind from Cape Town has decided to focus solely on SUP this year and will start the event as favourite, but he will be challenged by a number of other strong competitors.  Chris Bertish, A previous winner of the coveted mavericks big wave title in California, and Gary van Rooyen help make up a traditionally strong contingent from the Cape. SUP is growing rapidly as a sport and the strength of the field for this year’s event will hopefully provide some thrilling competition, as has come to be expected.

Other competitors to look out for who will be flying the WP banner will be Andrew Bance, Glen Thompson and Chelsea van Rooyen.

The South Coast Surf Carnival is sponsored by Independent on Saturday and Jeep Apparel. Contributing sponsors to the event are:  Island Style, Pick’n Pay Scottburgh, Bilt Surfboards, Thermo Plastic Concepts & Equipment (TCE), Maisch Fins, Nestle Pure Life Water, Natural Curve Surfboards, Bokomo, Ocean 2 Air Kitesurfing, Pro Class Wetsuits, Phatboyz, Carling Black Label.

South Coast Surf Carnival Attracts SA’s Finest Longboarders, Kitesurfers and SUP Riders

Press release

South Coast Surf Carnival Attracts SA’s Finest Longboarders, Kitesurfers and SUP Riders

With less than 20 days to go before KZN’s highly anticipated South Coast Surf Carnival sponsored by Jeep Apparel and the Independent on Saturday, entries have been pouring in fast and furious for the longboarding, kitesurfing and stand up paddleboarding (SUP) event. South Africa’s top wave riders are gearing up for the South Coast Surf Carnival including the likes of Johno Rosslind (WP) and Brandon Ribbink (KZN) who have opted to focus on the SUP division as opposed to their usual preference of longboarding.

The open Longboard division will be left wide open with top favourites out of the running as Jason Ribbink (KZN) has to step down due to injury and Matthew Moir (WP) will be away competing overseas . This will result in father and son team Deon and Justin Bing (WP) determined to snatch this year’s titles with Jeep and Bilt team rider Dylan Mcleod (WP) hot on their heels.

Working hard to retain his junior title will be Scott Lefevre (KZN) who excelled in the conditions last year and punters will have him as a hot favourite in the Open and Junior divisions, Brad Trickett (KZN) will be a dark horse on his new Natural Curve Stealth bomber as will Maisch fins’ owner Justin Maisch (SKZN) who is always calm under pressure while showing progress each year.

The ladies division will be sizzling with SA under 17 surfing champion Sarah Baum confirming her entry. Baum will bring her international flare to the contest with title seekers Jessica Lefevre (KZN) and Nikki Trickett (KZN) giving her a run for her money.

Peter Petersen (WP) will be defending the kitesurfing wave riding event but with the recent “weeks” of relentless North Easterly winds local kiters will be pumped up and raring to go. Early entries to the kitesurfing include Alwin van Breda (KZN) Gary van Rooyen (WP) and Ocean 2 Air Kiteboarding star Rob Chrystal and Sipho Dlamini (both KZN).

The South Coast Surf Carnival is sponsored by Independent on Saturday and Jeep Apparel. Contributing sponsors to the event are  Island Style, Pick’n Pay Scottburgh, Bilt Surfboards, Thermo Plastic Concepts & Equipment (TCE), Maisch Fins, Nestle Pure Life Water,  Natural Curve Surfboards, Bokomo, Ocean 2 Air Kitesurfing, Pro Class Wetsuits, Phatboyz, Carling Black Label.

Wet and Wild South Coast Surf Carnival Set to Rock Scottburgh this November

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Attention
4 October 2010

Wet and Wild South Coast Surf Carnival Set to Rock Scottburgh this November

KZN’s premier water sports event the South Coast Surf Carnival starts taking shape ensuring a glorious end to a glorious sporting year. This year marks the eighth edition of the South Coast Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel and the Independent on Saturday which will be taking place on the hospitable Scottburgh Beach during the 6th and 7th of November 2010

Over the years Scottburgh has proved  to be a perfect contest arena with its natural amphitheatre and local charm. The big swells and rough surf conditions over the years has not dampened the enthusiasm of the competitors who courageously enter the water in search of the various division titles.

Paul Godwin, Nerve Events. “We are thrilled that we have been able to keep the event running for eight years. It is the only event of its kind in South Africa which promotes “Cinderella sports” such as longboarding, kitesurfing and Stand up Paddle surfing under one roof and receives massive media support due to the calibre of competitors that flock in from all over the country.”

The longboard division has evolved into one of South Africa’s premier open longboarding events .The open division which will be left wide open  this year as current SCSC SUP and long boarding champ Jason Ribbink and contest favourite Matthew Moir (CT) had to pull out. However the division will still get great showing as previous SCSC champion, Jeep and Bilt Team Rider Dylan McLeod (EP) and Ross Lahana (EP) and Scott Lefevre surfing in the Junior and Open Division will be fighting tooth and nail to gain the title.

The kite surfing division will be a show down between distinguished kite surfers Lyle Bottcher and brothers Rob and Craig Chrystal. This event is judged as a wave riding contest much like surfing but with radical manoeuvres and fast paced action being the order of the day.

The ladies division will be wide open and sees Nikki Trickett’s return to competitive surfing, however up and coming Longboard surfers Jessica Lefevre and Mia Hordyk will be sure to give Trickett a run for her money, Not to forget last years Champion and ladies Longboard legend Lisa Smith who will be out to keep her title.

The Stand up Paddle surfing division (SUP) is attracting SA’s surfing cream of the crop due the rapid growth and interest in the sport. The SUP division was introduced to the contest in 2007 by waterman supremo Jason Ribbink and as been a hit ever since.

“The SUP wave event last year was insane, the guys really pulled out all the stops in the harsh conditions and certainly raised the bar for competitive SUP surfing in South Africa, I have no doubt 2010 will produce the same explosive surfing” cites Paul Godwin.

Cape Town’s Jonathan Rosslind is expected to be a strong contender in this years SUP event and is one of many surfers who will be making the annual pilgrimage to Scottburgh. Kzn’s hopes rest on Brandon Ribbink who will be hoping to follow in his Brothers footsteps and take out the SUP title.

The South Coast Surf Carnival is sponsored by Jeep Apparel and the Independent on Saturday. Contributing sponsors to the event are  Island Style, Pick’n Pay Scottburgh, Bilt Surfboards, Thermo Plastic Concepts & Equipment (TCE), Maisch Fins, Nestle Pure Life Water,  Natural Curve Surfboards, Bokomo, Ocean 2 Air Kitesurfing, Pro Class Wetsuits, Phatboyz, Carling Black  Label

Jeep Apparel and the Independent on Saturday -South Coast Surf Carnival

The countdown begins & registration evening

The countdown begins with only 19 days to go till the official event registration evening at Phatboyz. The carnival is hotting up with SA’s top exponents in each discipline practising and strategising for the event. After many years experience at this event most surfers have opted to specialise in one division, with the likes of Johno Rosslind (WP) and Brandon Ribbink (KZN) focusing on the SUP event. A new entry to the event but not new to the world of surfing is Gary van Rooyen(WP) who has entered three divisions (kite, SUP, and Over 50 longboard) now ladies and gentlemen we all know how Gary is going to feel come Sunday Afternoon – shame, but his is fit !!!! His daughter Chelsea has also entered the SUP event so the gauntlet is down for more ladies in the SUP event.

Peter Petersen (WP) will be defending the Kitesurfing wave riding event but with the recent “weeks” of relentless North Easterly winds local kiters will be pumped up and raring to go. Early entries to the kitesurfing see Alwin van Breda (KZN) Gary van Rooyen (WP) and Ocean 2 Air Kiteboardings Rob Chrystal and
Sipho Dlamini
The Longboard open division will be wide open this year as Jason Ribbink (KZN) is a very doubtful starter due to injury, Mouse Moir will be in action on another continent , so as mentioned this means the Open event is wide wide open, Jeep & Bilt rider Dylan Macleod (PE) will be one to look out for, also hoping to clinch the title is last years Jnr winner Scott Lefevre (KZN) who excelled in the conditions last year and punters will have him as a hot favourite, Brad Trickett (KZN) will be a dark horse on his new Natural Curve Stealth bomber as will Maisch fins’ Justin Maisch (SKZN) who is always cool and collected and improves each year at the event. Also look out for Ross Lahana (EP) and Andrew Bance (WP) who enter every year and are always in the hunt.......

The ladies division is actually full with 8 entries already confirmed so if any ladies still want to enter they better get hold off me soonest – send you entries !!  On the other hand the Juniors are extremely slack with only 2 entries to date hmmmmm....... Are there any junior longboarders in KZN ?

The over 35 and over 50 divisions are shaping up quite nicely with the likes of defending over 35 winner Craig Daniel on a mission to win, Glen Thompson (SC) is also back for another taste in the SUP and over 35 division.

The over 50 division will be a good one this year with the likes of Durbanites
Dave Hansen, Shaun Selman, Attie vd Pas,  Mike Larmont  Dave van den Berg & Gary van Rooyen (WP) already booked in and raring to go......

The question is what will Scotties deliver this year, I believe we are due a “mellow weekend” with cooking surf for all....
Thanks to all who have entered to date from around the country.... It really is a treat that the event is so well supported nationally
