World Class Wave Riding for the Durban Surf Carnival Finals

Spectators at the Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel were treated to world class wave riding in the Longboarding, Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) and Waveski finals held at New Pier Beach on 17 June 2012. The conditions were perfect all weekend with sunny weather, no wind and contestable 1-metre waves.

Luke Patterson (Westbrook), dominated the Open Longboarding final despite surfing with an injury; Patterson had sliced open his foot whilst crayfishing and received stitches late on Saturday afternoon. Patterson combined traditional longboarding manouvres with some stylish turns to clinch victory ahead of Cape Town’s Justin Bing. Perennial favourites Josch Schmeltzer (Durban North) and Dylan Macleod (Port Elizabeth) finished third and fourth, respectively.

Nikki Trickett (Durban), Grant Gilmour (Umhlanga) and Gary van Rooyen (Cape Town) won the Ladies, Over 35 and Over 50 Longboarding titles, respectively.

Justin Bing (Cape Town) impressed the judges to no end from the first round of the SUP Open division right through to the final which he won in style. Top South African SUP pioneer Chris Bertish (Cape Town) took a well deserved second place with Dylan Frick (Cape Town) and Peter Petersen (Cape Town) finishing third and fourth.

Matthew van der Linden (Cape Town),  Penny Stemmet (Cape Town) and Gary van Rooyen put on polished performances to be crowned the Junior, Women and Over 45 Legend SUP champions, respectively. The winners of the SUP contest are eligible for squad selection to represent South African at the upcoming 2013 International Surfing Association Stand Up Paddle World Championships.

Andre Burger (Eastern Province) won the Premier Waveski final ahead of Doug Copeland (Border).

“We are really proud of the success of this year’s Durban Surf Carnival, this is the tenth year that we have run the event and the first time that we had moved to Durban which proved to be a great move. We had a record number of entries with 130 top competitors travelling from all over South Africa to take part,” commented Paul Godwin from Nerve Events.

The Mad Dog Surf School run by Shaun Sellman offered a life-changing experience with free surfing lessons open to all members of the public. The lessons were well attended with participants thrilled to learn how to stand and ride waves.

Sponsors of the event included the City of Durban - Durban “the warmest place to be, Jeep Apparel and the Independent on Saturday.

Support sponsors included Red Bull, Thule, Naish SUP, Natural Curve Surfboards, Nestle Pure Life Water, Bokomo, Container Conversions, Mad Dog Surf School, Maisch Fins, Nescafe, Pro Class Wetsuits,Thermo Plastic Concepts & Equipment (TCE), Carling Black Label and Nando’s.
