With less than a month to go before this years edition of the Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnival on November 26 and 27 at Scottburgh beach, the action is heating up with entries from top wave riders pouring in. The 2011 watersports festival features Longboarding, Kiteboarding, Stand Up Paddle surfing and Waveski surfing for men, women and juniors. This event attracts the top surfers in each division with many past and present World and South African Champions taking part; this year in particular has attracted the cream of the crop with SA’s top ladies entering the fray.
The Women’s longboarding division has grown exponentially over the years with international WQS competitor Sarah Baum (Athlone Park) and current South African Longboard Girls Champion Heather Klug (Glenwood) confirming their entries. Klug is the most likely to provide competition for Baum in this division.
“I have been training at the DHS high performance centre with a biokineticist since the beginning of October to prepare myself more for competitive surfing and I am really looking forward to the South Coast Surf Carnival,” commented Klug who also competes in lifesaving, short boarding and longboarding events.
There is also good interest coming in from the ladies for the inclusion of a ladies division in the SUP division, “We are quite happy to include such a division if we can get the numbers, we are getting a lot of enquiries from the Western Cape mainly and we are very happy with the interest that this event receives nationally,” cites Paul Godwin the event creator.
Twins Tammy and Penny Robarts (Western Cape) will be competing in the SUP division, both have represented their province for surfing and competed in international surfing events.
The kitesurfing and Waveski ladies divisions will also be hotly contested. World Waveski Champion Sandra Pienaar (Port Elizabeth) will set the standard of riding in the inaugural South Coast Surf Carnival Waveski tournament.
The Men’s divisions across the board will once again be a who’s who of South African Surfing, with early entries being Brandon Ribbink (Berea) and Jon Ivins (Berea) as well as Dylan and Francois Frick (Cape Town) in the SUP division. Dylan Macleod (PE), Brad Trickett (Morningside) and Wade Brodowicz (Durban) are expected to head up the Premier Open Longboard division.
The Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnival is sponsored by Jeep Apparel and the valued support sponsors include Independent on Saturday, Thule, Red Bull Mobile, Phatboyz, Wimpy, Bilt Surfboards, Carling Black Label, Natural Curve Surfboards, Ocean 2 Air Kitesurfing, Maisch Fins, Nestle Pure Life Water, Island Style, Pro Class Wetsuits, Thermo Plastic Concepts & Equipment (TCE), Bokomo and MacSki.
