SEA PLEDGE LAUNCHED: GOOD NEWS FROM COP 17

SEA Pledge was launched at COP 17 and in many coastal areas around South

Africa in both serious and fun events on 3rd December. Four children carried

the SEA Pledge petition and resolution to the chairpersons of the Global

Ocean Forum and read the resolution to the audience. 

The build up to the launch at COP 17 began on 12th October when Sustainable

Seas Trust travelled to coastal towns between Sodwana and Saldanha to

encourage involvement with COP 17 and SEA Pledge. The SEA Pledge team

presented 25 lectures and met with mayors, clubs, businesses and schools

involving them all in the SEA Pledge initiative for ocean conservation and

sustainability.

On World Oceans Day at COP 17, 3rd December, children and adults at beach

and water venues around South Africa also launched SEA Pledge and celebrated

the oceans. Despite poor weather (not necessarily due to climate change)

many people turned out between Sodwana and Saldanha to pledge their support

and to encourage governments and major international organizations to commit

to caring for the oceans and coasts. Their activities included building sand

sculptures, such as a giant "Handprint for Change" sand sculpture, beach

clean ups, penguin releases, scuba diving, outings in boats, painting a

giant Coelacanth mural and indoor functions such as dinners and braais.

SEA Pledge has been collecting petition signatures as part of their coastal

tour. It has been 13 years since the UN last had an International Year of

Oceans, so given the urgent need to reinvest in better understanding the

seas and marine life, the SEA Pledge petition and resolution calls upon the

UN to declare an International Year of Oceans and Coasts. The petition was

accepted by the Global Oceans Forum at which the President, Dr Biliana

Cicin-Sain, pledged to endorse and forward the resolution to the UN. As many

speakers at the Global Ocean Forum indicated, we need to invest in ocean

research and create new standards of care in order to combat climate change.

As of the launch date, members of 29 countries around the world have

indicated support for SEA Pledge. Visit our website to view the map

be the first person in your community to mark your commitment to the

environment, or you could join the Business or Schools Challenge and compete

with other local business or schools for the best Pledges.

JEEP SOUTH COAST SURF CARNIVAL.

Well another year of the Jeep south coast surf carnival, the 9^th edition is done and dusted. A massive shout out to Nerve Events , Jeep Apparel , Independent newspapers , Hughie Thompson , Thule and many many more. It’s the involvement and support of brands like these that has made this event one of the best events on our calendar.

Paul and Pat from Nerve events have been at this for 9years now and are already planning the 10^th edition just one day after the event finished. I would like to say thanks on behalf of every longboarder out there for the work you guys put into this event although at times may feel a little thankless all your effort  is very much appreciated by all of us and we hope this event is still running 9years from now. It is certainly one of the most professional and well run contests all year, and it’s no wonder that year in and year out it attracts the best longboarders from around the country.

This year saw near perfect conditions on day one of the event with clean 4ft waves peeling down the lineup for almost the entire Saturday. Sunday on the other hand was …..Well….. I’m not sure they have invented words to describe the waves yet, BUT hey it certainly brought out all the skills of every surfer and in the end the best of the best came out on top.

Hughie Thompson put in another stellar display of what longboarding is all about and made the most difficult of waves look smooth and graceful and thus taking out this years over 50’s title ahead of Colin Whitmore, Bushy Greef, and Dave Hanson, respectively.

                              

In the over 35’s , Local boy Justin Maisch dominated the entire event winning every heat and including the one that mattered the most earning himself 1^st place. Craig Daniel finished in 2^nd followed closely by Marcel Hoffman and Grant Gilmore.

                           

The Open ladies was won by Nix Trickett, with Heather Klug finishing runner up, Traci Lee Phillips in 3thd and Penny Stemment from WP in 4^th.

                            

The Open Mens was cleaned up by Josh Schmeltzer, he absolutely smoked every heat he surfed in and was a clear favorite from round one. Dylan Macleod (EP) in 2^nd followed home closely by Brandon Jackson and Ross Lahana (EP).

                               

Well done to all the finalists, and cannot wait for SA Champs in Vic Bay early next year.

Luke McGilliwie (Cape Town) claimed the Men's Open kiteboarding title at this weekend's (26-27 November) ninth annual Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnival. Held in perfect kiteboarding conditions with strong north easterly winds buffeting the 3-4 foot swell at Scottburgh's Main Beach, it was McGilliwie who dominated an exhilarating final, prevailing over Rob Chrystal

(Umhlanga) and Lyle Bottcher (Durban).
