Top Women’s Surfing Expected at 12th Annual Roxy Wahine Cup
New Pier, Durban – The country’s best female surfers are preparing for South Africa’s premier all-women’s surfing event, the Roxy Wahine Cup presented by the City of Durban. The event, which has for many years been staged at Suncoast Beach, has relocated to New Pier, Durban’s ultimate performance wave, and will run on the weekend of the 18th and 19th of June. Several big surfing events have been staged over the last decade at New Pier, this is due to the consistency of the surf and the ability to offer high quality waves for world class surfing.
With over R33, 000 in prize money on offer, South Africa’s top female surfers from all corners of the country are expected to enter. The Women’s, U16 and U14 Divisions are sanctioned by Surfing South Africa and the U20 girls division is a 1 star ASP Pro Junior rated event. This means that the winner will have an automatic start in all of the ASP World Junior Championship events in 2011. This event is vital for all competitors who ultimately aim to be the ASP Women’s World Champion.
“ASP Africa would like to welcome such a world famous surf brand like Roxy and the Roxy Wahine Cup to the ASP family. To be associated with an event with 12 years of history is fantastic for any association,” said Colin Fitch from Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Africa.
There is also a new addition to the Roxy Wahine Cup namely the girls surf lifesaving division. “Roxy is very much a surf and beach lifestyle brand and by including the girls surf lifesaving division we are catering for a wider group of girls that also live and breathe a very similar lifestyle,” said Tamara Westbrook of Roxy.
Surfers to watch out for are current ASP World Junior Champion Bianca Buitendag of George as well as newly crowned SA under 20 Girls Champion Sarah Baum of Warner Beach. Baum came through the Roxy Learn To Surf program many years ago and in 2010 finished third in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships in New Zealand. Other top surfers who will be competing include newly crowned SA Women’s Champion Nikita Robb of East London, 2010 South African team member Chantelle Rautenbach of Melkbosstrand as well as Tarryn Chudleigh and Tanika Hoffman, both of Kommetjie in Cape Town. Surfers will win prize money and great prizes from sponsors Roxy and Skullcandy.
The action gets underway at 8:00am on Saturday June the 18th with finals and the awards ceremony held on the beach on Sunday afternoon.
The Roxy Wahine Cup is presented by the City of Durban in association with Suncoast Casino and supporting sponsors include Skullcandy, Softlips, Supersport and Red Bull. The ASP Pro Junior event is sanctioned by ASP while all other divisions are sanctioned by SSA, the governing body for surfing in South Africa.

The Quiksilver Pro Junior reloads for Durban...
Quiksilver Pro Junior Surf City To Play Host To South Africa’s Top Junior Surfers This Easter To bolster this year’s junior surfing event locals and holiday-makers will be able to enjoy beach soccer, volleyball, touch rugby, learn to surf lessons and other activities which will all be taking place along Durban’s beachfront this Easter. For decades Durban has played host to top class international and local surfing events. The Gunston 500, Quiksilver Pro Durban, Mr Price Pro, Glodina Night Surfing Classic, Quiksilver ISA World Games and many other profiled events have been staged at what has been deemed one of the most consistent and welcoming surf destinations in the world. Warm water, beautiful weather, consistent surf, piers and easy access to the surf makes it a sought-after destination for all traveling surfers. Durban has also produced some top internationally ranked surfers through the ages, this includes the likes of Shaun Tomson, Martin Potter, Mike Burness and more recently Travis Logie and Jordy Smith. Smith is currently ranked as world number 2 after finishing behind 10 times ASP World Champion Kelly Slater in the 2010 season. The Quiksilver Pro Junior 2011, which is a 2 star rated ASP Pro Junior, aims to create a platform for junior surfers to compete, challenge and push one another giving them experience on a big stage, and to then use that experience when competing abroad. Over 80 of the country’s best junior surfers will be in Durban competing for over R100 000 in prize money and other generous prizes. The event gets underway on Friday 22 April and ends on Sunday 24 April. Local favourites include Beyrick de Vries (Umhlanga) and David van Zyl (Glen Anil) who are both very familiar with the event venue, New Pier. The King of the Groms is the younger division in the event and caters for surfers under the age of 16. The U16 winner will receive R5 000 and an all expenses paid trip to France for the international finals in October, an opportunity of a lifetime for young surfers. Slade Prestwich (Scottburgh) will be hoping to defend his title but may not have it all his own way with the likes of Diran Zakarian (Cape Town) and Dylan Lightfoot (Jeffrey’s Bay) hot on his heals. The event will kick-off on Friday morning with the Future Stars division which sees 9 surfers from Surfing South Africa’s transformation program competing for a wildcard spot in the Pro Junior main event. Fika Ngubane is the lone surfer from Kwa-Zulu Natal and aims to impress at this year’s event, “I am really excited for the event this year, it’s such a great opportunity and there is such a cool vibe down at the beach”, said an upbeat Ngubane. All Future Stars will be flown to Durban and accommodated courtesy of Quiksilver. There will be Quiksilver and Skullcandy prizes on offer in the Expression Session before the finals, which is bound to produce some mind-blowing surfing. The finals for all four divisions will be held on Sunday (24 April) afternoon with the prize giving and crowning immediately after at the event site. All photos, videos, results and more can be found at the event’s website: quikprojunior.co.za as well as facebook.com/quiksilver. The Quiksilver Pro Junior and King of the Groms is presented by the City of Durban together with additional sponsorship support from Independent On Saturday, Skullcandy, SuperSport, Red Bull, Bokomo and Nestle Pure Life Water. |

Future Stars Selected To Compete at Quiksilver Pro Junior 2011 presented by Durban
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 March, 2011 : - - New Pier, Durban -- Eight promising young surfers have been selected out of the Surfing South Africa transformation program to compete in the Future Stars division at the upcoming Quiksilver Pro Junior 2011 presented by Durban. The Future Stars will compete at the Quiksilver Pro Junior and King of the Groms which is set to take place from 22-24 April at Durban’s New Pier Beach (Dairy Beach).
The Future Stars division is an initiative between Surfing South Africa (SSA), Quiksilver and the City of Durban. It aims to give promising young talent the chance to take part in an event like the Quiksilver Pro Junior.” The event really creates a stage for these surfers and gives them the opportunity to show off their abilities. It allows them to show their skills at a major tournament and gives them a chance to make a name for themselves.
Surfing South Africa really appreciates the investment that Quiksilver makes and we are pleased that these eight surfers get this opportunity to shine on a big stage,” said Robin de Kock, General Manager of Surfing South Africa.
This year Papi Makinyane (17), Brandon Benjamin (16) and Benjamin De Castro (17) will be representing Western Province at the event. Marchal Reans (16) will be the lone Eastern Province representative whilst Khayehile Ncgobo (18), Bright Ntuli (18) and Thalente Mkhize (18) will be making the short trip up from Southern Kwa-Zulu Natal. Fika Ngubane (18) has been selected as the only competitor from Kwa-Zulu Natal.
The majority of these surfers have represented their provinces at a national level and are no slouches when it comes to competitive surfing. Two semi finals and a final will be held on Friday April 22.
The Future Stars division offers these young surfers the opportunity to surf against each other in front of the best junior surfers in the country whilst competing for a wildcard berth into the main event of the Quiksilver Pro Junior. All of their fees and expenses including airfares, meals, accommodation and entries are paid for which is what makes one of these eight slots so sought after.
In 2009 and 2010 Jeffrey’s Bay local Dominic Abersalie managed to edge out good friend and fierce rival Bertie Stuurman to take the gold, 2010 was their final year as junior surfers which leaves the door wide open for a new winning face in 2011.
The Quiksilver Pro Junior is a 2 star ASP Pro Junior event that boasts a hefty R75 000 in prize money. The event attracts the best junior surfers from all over the country. Event favourites include 2010 winner Shaun Joubert (Mossel Bay) and Beyrick de Vries (Umhlanga). The King of the Groms will be held at the same time for surfers under the age of 16 years old. The winner of the prestigious U16 division will be flown to France to compete in the Quiksilver King of the Groms international finals in October. Other divisions include U14 and U12.
There will be some great Quiksilver and Skullcandy prizes on offer in the Expression Session before the finals on Sunday (24th), which should produce some great surfing. The finals for all four divisions will be held on Sunday (24 April) afternoon with the event prize giving and crowning immediately after at the event site.
The Quiksilver Pro Junior and King of the Groms is presented by Durban and other sponsors include Skullcandy, SuperSport, Brandhouse, Bokomo and Nestle Pure Life Water.
