ISA World StandUp Paddle and Paddleboard Championship
February 24- March 2
Miraflores, Lima, Peru

La Jolla, California, December 26, 2012- The International Surfing Association (ISA) is excited to announce the second edition of the ISA World StandUp Paddle (SUP) and Paddleboard Championship in Miraflores, Peru. After a historic inaugural event in January 2012, Peru is getting ready to once again host the world's top athletes to compete February 24th to March 2nd, 2013.
Peru is anticipating 150 of the world's greatest watermen from 25 countries who will compete in 11 different events in the Men and Women's divisions, all in search of taking home the Gold Medals and the Club Waikiki-Peru Team Trophy.
"SUP is one of the fastest growing sports, not just within surfing, but of all sports around the world," said ISA President Fernando Aguerre. "It is an honor to also have the Paddleboard Championship because prone paddling is an ancient discipline of surfing that dates back to the 1700's in Hawaii, and it's also strongly growing right now. Thanks to the continued support from legendary Club Waikiki, IPD (Peruvian Institute of Sports), ADO (Peruvian Association of Olympic Athletes), and COP (Peruvian Olympic Committee), we look forward to replicating the success of the inaugural 2012 ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship. It is with great pleasure that we will once again watch the world's best competitors showcase their talent at the historic surf beach of La Pampilla, in Lima, Peru."

In the 2012 ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship, 17 teams (Argentina, Austria, Australia, Brazil, Chile, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, USA and Venezuela) gathered in Miraflores, to become part of surfing and ISA's history as the first countries to compete in the ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship.

The Australian team won six out of the eleven possible Individual Medals plus the Team Relay Race, giving the Aussies the overall Team Gold Medal and the Club Waikiki-Peru Trophy, establishing them as the world leader in SUP and Paddleboard.
The 2013 World SUP and Paddleboard Championship will include Men and Women's SUP Surfing, SUP Technical Race, SUP Distance Race, Paddleboard Distance Race, Team Relay Race, plus a new exciting event, the Paddleboard Technical Race for both Men and Women.

76 homes destroyed by St Francis Bay fire

76 homes destroyed by St Francis Bay fire: The fire which tore through St Francis Bay, in the Eastern Cape, has destroyed or damaged 76 houses, the Kouga municipality says.

Help Graham Hynes Rise from the Ashes

A devastating fire swept through the Canal area of Cape St Francis on Sunday November 11th.
Strong winds made it impossible for fire fighters, residents and helpers to get the blaze under control and between 6pm and 2am 100 houses were affected.
Up to 80 of these homes were burnt to the ground.

Thankfully there was no loss of life but for 80 or so homeowners all that is left of their houses is a couple of walls.
South African surfing’s legendary coach, mentor and elder Graham Hynes (83) could only watch as the fire took his house all his possessions and his memories.

As a surfing community it is up to us to ensure that Hynsie gets our love, support and financial assistance.
He is a special person and he needs our help so Surfing South Africa has set up a bank account to help him get his life back.
The details of this fund are available on Facebook.

Here are some important Diabetes facts!!

·         Diabetes is responsible for more deaths worldwide each year than HIV/Aids and Breast Cancer.

·         Diabetes affects 300 million people worldwide and is expected to affect 500 million by 2030

·         3.8 Million Deaths are linked directly to diabetes-related causes.

·         Every 8 seconds a person dies from diabetes-related causes.

·         Every 8 seconds 2 people develop diabetes.

·         Just under ∏ of all people with diabetes are aged between 40 and 59. More than 70% of them live in developing countries like South Africa.

Are some people more at risk than others of developing diabetes?

·         Yes, certain population groups are more at risk than others developing diabetes i.e. Indian and Asian (between 14 – 20%).

·         It’s important that every South African gets to know the Diabetes Risk Factors. You need to ask yourselves the following questions:

·         Am I over 35 years or older?

·         Am I overweight (especially if you carry most of your weight around your middle)?

·         Do I have high cholesterol?

·         Do I have high blood pressure or heart disease?

·         Am I from a high-risk group (in South Africa if you are of Indian/Asian descent you are at particular risk)?

·         Do I have a family history of diabetes?

·         Have I given birth to a baby that weighed over 4kg at birth, or have I had gestational diabetes during pregnancy?

More than 50% of people living with diabetes do not even know they have it. Why is this?

Type 2 diabetes in its early stages is often referred to as the silent killer. In the early stages of diabetes there are no symptoms at all.

Symptoms of Diabetes:

•               Unusual thirst

•               Frequent urination

•               Unusual weight loss

•               Extreme fatigue or lack of energy

•               Blurred vision

•               Frequent or recurring infections

•               Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal, boils and itchy skin

•               Tingling and numbness in the hands and feet

“It’s important for people who have been diagnosed with diabetes to have certain support systems in place (their family and friends, doctors, nursing sisters, dieticians, DSA).

At Diabetes South Africa we inform, encourage and support all people who have diabetes and their families. We offer telephonic advice, support groups, quarterly Diabetes Focus magazine, children’s & family camps, patient workshops, seminars and Awareness events as well as distributing many different forms of literature and many more different support tools.

It’s important if you are diagnosed with diabetes to understand the condition fully, so you can take control your own health. One needs to “understand diabetes and take control.” says Jenny Russell, the Durban Branch Manager of Diabetes SA.

The organisers and supporters of Diabetes SA are all set to go! After a successful first event with over 1000 people entering last year, the Durban Global Diabetes 5km Walk supported by Pronutro will once again take place along Durban’s Golden Mile on Sunday, October 28th. The organisers are expecting over 3000 people to walk the 5km route this year.

Jenny Russell, the Branch Manager at Diabetes SA in Durban says, “With more people worldwide dying of Diabetes complications than AIDS and cancer, we are losing the battle against this cruel and deadly disease in every community. It is hoped that campaigns like the Global Diabetes Walk will continue to raise awareness of Diabetes, the Health Tsunami of the 21st century, and move people towards living more active and healthy lifestyles”.

The MC for the event is local wellness celebrity and Fitness Specialist Lisa Raleigh, who will be providing a few fitness demonstrations and educating the public on appropriate diet and exercise.

“South Africa needs an event like this. Diabetes has been dubbed the ‘silent killer’ for years, with good reason, and it’s time we sat up and did something about it! I deal with so many clients suffering from diabetes and similar lifestyle diseases, and so much can be done to prevent them.

Seeing so many sufferers on a regular basis makes this an issue close to my heart” Raleigh said. Her advice for those preparing for the walk is to stretch, keep hydrated and make sure you are wearing a good, supportive pair of running shoes.
In addition to the Walk, there will be a festive health expo which allows members of the public to receive free glucose and blood pressure tests, among others.  Lotus FM  on air personality, Neville Pillay will be on hand entertaining the crowds and offering loads of lucky draws. There will be fun for all from the young to the not so young.

To register and  the collection or completion of entry forms will be in Arena 3 outside the new Kauai restaurant at uShaka Marine World on Saturday, October 20th, Sunday, October 21st and Saturday, October 27th from 08h00 to 13h00.
