SEA PLEDGE LAUNCHED: GOOD NEWS FROM COP 17

SEA Pledge was launched at COP 17 and in many coastal areas around South

Africa in both serious and fun events on 3rd December. Four children carried

the SEA Pledge petition and resolution to the chairpersons of the Global

Ocean Forum and read the resolution to the audience. 

The build up to the launch at COP 17 began on 12th October when Sustainable

Seas Trust travelled to coastal towns between Sodwana and Saldanha to

encourage involvement with COP 17 and SEA Pledge. The SEA Pledge team

presented 25 lectures and met with mayors, clubs, businesses and schools

involving them all in the SEA Pledge initiative for ocean conservation and

sustainability.

On World Oceans Day at COP 17, 3rd December, children and adults at beach

and water venues around South Africa also launched SEA Pledge and celebrated

the oceans. Despite poor weather (not necessarily due to climate change)

many people turned out between Sodwana and Saldanha to pledge their support

and to encourage governments and major international organizations to commit

to caring for the oceans and coasts. Their activities included building sand

sculptures, such as a giant "Handprint for Change" sand sculpture, beach

clean ups, penguin releases, scuba diving, outings in boats, painting a

giant Coelacanth mural and indoor functions such as dinners and braais.

SEA Pledge has been collecting petition signatures as part of their coastal

tour. It has been 13 years since the UN last had an International Year of

Oceans, so given the urgent need to reinvest in better understanding the

seas and marine life, the SEA Pledge petition and resolution calls upon the

UN to declare an International Year of Oceans and Coasts. The petition was

accepted by the Global Oceans Forum at which the President, Dr Biliana

Cicin-Sain, pledged to endorse and forward the resolution to the UN. As many

speakers at the Global Ocean Forum indicated, we need to invest in ocean

research and create new standards of care in order to combat climate change.

As of the launch date, members of 29 countries around the world have

indicated support for SEA Pledge. Visit our website to view the map

be the first person in your community to mark your commitment to the

environment, or you could join the Business or Schools Challenge and compete

Well another year of the Jeep south coast surf carnival, the 9^th edition is done and dusted. A massive shout out to Nerve Events , Jeep Apparel , Independent newspapers , Hughie Thompson , Thule and many many more. It’s the involvement and support of brands like these that has made this event one of the best events on our calendar.

Paul and Pat from Nerve events have been at this for 9years now and are already planning the 10^th edition just one day after the event finished. I would like to say thanks on behalf of every longboarder out there for the work you guys put into this event although at times may feel a little thankless all your effort  is very much appreciated by all of us and we hope this event is still running 9years from now. It is certainly one of the most professional and well run contests all year, and it’s no wonder that year in and year out it attracts the best longboarders from around the country.

This year saw near perfect conditions on day one of the event with clean 4ft waves peeling down the lineup for almost the entire Saturday. Sunday on the other hand was …..Well….. I’m not sure they have invented words to describe the waves yet, BUT hey it certainly brought out all the skills of every surfer and in the end the best of the best came out on top.

Hughie Thompson put in another stellar display of what longboarding is all about and made the most difficult of waves look smooth and graceful and thus taking out this years over 50’s title ahead of Colin Whitmore, Bushy Greef, and Dave Hanson, respectively.

                              

In the over 35’s , Local boy Justin Maisch dominated the entire event winning every heat and including the one that mattered the most earning himself 1^st place. Craig Daniel finished in 2^nd followed closely by Marcel Hoffman and Grant Gilmore.

                           

The Open ladies was won by Nix Trickett, with Heather Klug finishing runner up, Traci Lee Phillips in 3thd and Penny Stemment from WP in 4^th.

                            

The Open Mens was cleaned up by Josh Schmeltzer, he absolutely smoked every heat he surfed in and was a clear favorite from round one. Dylan Macleod (EP) in 2^nd followed home closely by Brandon Jackson and Ross Lahana (EP).

                               

Well done to all the finalists, and cannot wait for SA Champs in Vic Bay early next year.

Luke McGilliwie (Cape Town) claimed the Men's Open kiteboarding title at this weekend's (26-27 November) ninth annual Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnival. Held in perfect kiteboarding conditions with strong north easterly winds buffeting the 3-4 foot swell at Scottburgh's Main Beach, it was McGilliwie who dominated an exhilarating final, prevailing over Rob Chrystal

(Umhlanga) and Lyle Bottcher (Durban).

A fun weekend of Longboarding, SUP, Kiteboarding and Waveski held on Scottborough Beach, KZN, South Africa annually.

Scottburgh’s Main Beach served up some extremely tricky conditions on the final day (27 November) of this year’s ninth annual Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnival, in stark contrast to the near perfect surf enjoyed by the longboarding, stand up paddlesurfing (SUP), waveski surfing and kitesurfing competitors yesterday. Nevertheless, Josh Schmeltzer (Durban) Brandon Ribbink (Durban) and Nikki Trickett (Durban) deservedly claimed titles in the Men’s Open Longboard, Men’s SUP and Ladies Longboard divisions.



The hotly contested Men’s Open Longboard division lived up to its premier billing, with the final featuring a thrilling battle between surfers all considered top contenders for the title. It was Schmeltzer who held out over Dylan Macleod (EP), Brandon Jackson (Durban) and Ross Lahana (WP) in the testing conditions. The Ladies Longboard division was equally as exciting, with Nikki Trickett prevailing over current South African Girls Longboard Champion Heather Klug (Glenwood), Traci Lee Phillips (KZN) and Penny Stemmet (WP).



In the Open division of the Men’s SUP contest, Brandon Ribbink continued his great run of form from the previous day and claimed the title won by his brother Jason back in 2009. Donald Brierly (KZN), Grantley Read (KZN) and Francois Frick (WP) claimed the 2nd, 3rd and 4th spots in the Men’s SUP division respectively. Penny Stemmet was also in contention for the Ladies SUP title, along with Lynne Mackey (Durban) and Tammy Robarts (WP). Ultimately, Robarts made the most of the tricky conditions and did enough to secure victory and claim the title.



In the Men’s Longboard Over 35 division, Justin Maisch (Durban) was unbeatable, having not lost a heat in this division on his way to the final. Craig Daniel (Durban), Marcel Hoffman (Durban) and Grant Gilmour (Durban) did well to surf their way to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th spots in the Men’s Over 35 Longboard division respectively. The Men's Longboard Over 50 division saw some of the sports old hands making the most of their experience to put on what was a most exciting division. Ultimately it was Hugh Thompson (Durban) who held off strong challenges from Colin Whitmore (Durban), Dave Hansen (Durban) and Bushy Greef (Zululand) to end his weekend off on a high by claiming a victory and the Men's Longboard Over 50 division.



For the first time in its nine year history, the Jeep Apparel South Cast Surf Carnival also featured the KZN Waveski Open, a decision no doubt ratified by the top quality field that entered this event. The hotly contested division was dominated by current New Age World Champion and current #5 on the World Tour Andre Burger (Border). Following hot on his heels were Ian Macleod (PE), Percy Louw (Border) and Chris Jones (Border) respectively.



Event organiser Paul Godwin of Nerve Events said that “we have had an absolutely amazing time during our ninth South Coast Surf Carnival. We had the best surf that this event has ever seen on Saturday, and then today the kiteboarders were in the element in the windy conditions. We were also very happy with how the new event, the KZN Waveski Open, was received, and we are hoping to grow this aspect of our event in the years to come. Next year is an even bigger milestone, and we will be working extra hard to ensure that our tenth event will be the biggest and best yet”.



The Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnival also played host to the Sustainable Seas Trust’s (SST) SEA Pledge Coastal Road Tour. The campaign, which commenced in Port Elizabeth on 12 October, 2011 will see the SST team visit over 20 coastal towns on its way from Sodwana to Saldanha, collecting pledges from people, business and institutions who intend to increase their efforts at preserving our marine environments. The signatures will be handed over by Dr. AJ Ribbink, Director of the Sustainable Seas Trust, at the COP17/CMP7 climate change conference in Durban on 3 December. According to Jens Currie, SST volunteer, “the response from the surfers and the public at this event has been amazing, everyone is passionate about the cause and willing to throw their support behind what is a most important cause”.



Throughout the event, Sean Selman and his trained surfing instructors from Umthombo were also on hand to teach the basics of surfing to anyone who was keen to learn. According to Selman, “despite the conditions, we still had some very successful clinics, with 12 children attending on both days. The majority of the kids were able to stand up by the end of the day, so we were very happy with the results”.

The longboarding, stand up paddlesurfing, waveski surfing and kitesurfing competitors taking part in this year’s ninth edition of the Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnival were greeted by near-perfect conditions at Scottburgh's main beach on the opening day of the two day event (26-27 November). Three to four foot waves were the order of the day at Scottburgh, with the light Easterly wind that picked up doing little to affect the amazing conditions. Brandon Ribbink (KZN), Dylan Macleod (EP) and Penny Stemmet (WP), all looked good in the opening rounds of the Men’s SUP, Men’s Open Longboard and Ladies Open Longboard divisions respectively.



At the time of going to press, the opening heats of the premier Men’s Open Longboard division were just taking to the water. Traditionally a hotly contested division, this year is no different with some of the sport’s top names to go head-to-head in a series of big name heats. Brandon Jackson (Durban), Josh Schmelzer (Durban) and Scottburgh local Casey Grant dominated the early Men’s Open Longboard heats, and perennial contenders Ross Lahana (WP) and Dylan Macleod (EP) will also be looking to claim a victory in this division.



As always, the popular South Cast Surf Carnival attracted a high quality field, replete with a host of South African and world champions. Current South African Longboard Champion Heather Klug (Glenwood) did enough to progress to the finals of the Ladies Longboard division, along with Penny Stemmet, Nikki Trickett (KZN) and Traci Lee Phillips (KZN). Stemmet had a busy day, having surfed her way to a heat victory in the Ladies SUP division, early on the opening day of the event. Stemmet will be back in the thick of the action tomorrow (Sunday 27 November) as she contests the Ladies Longboard and SUP finals. This year, the water sports festival was grown to include the KZN Waveski Open, a hotly contested division that attracted the likes of current New Age World and current #5 on the World Tour Andre Burger (Border), as well as accomplished Durban waterman Dean Bottcher.



In the Open division of the SUP contest, top contenders Brandon Ribbink (KZN) and father and son Dylan and Francois Frick (WP) all won their heats, and progressed to tomorrow’s semi-finals along with Grantley Read (KZN), Grant Roberts (KZN) and Donald Brierly (KZN).



The Men's Longboard Over 50 division saw some of the sports experienced old hands going toe to toe in the highly contestable surf. Colin Whitmore, Dave Hansen, Hugh Thompson (all Durban) and Bushy Greef (Zululand) will all be looking to end their weekend off on a high by claiming a victory in the final tomorrow. Justin Maisch (Mzumbe) is also looking like a title contender in the Men’s Longboard Over 35 division, having dominated his heat from start to finish late on day one of the event.



In the KZN Waveski Association Open event, Andre Burger (Border), Ian Macleod (PE), Doug Copeland (Cape Town) all made it through their heats on day one. According to Duane Schwarz, Chairman of KZN Waveski Association, “the high quality field and great conditions translated into some epic waveski action, and we are super excited to see what the guys produce tomorrow”.



Looking ahead to tomorrow’s action, Scottburgh’s Main Beach is set to be a hub of activity starting at 07h30. The wind is expected to kick up later in the day, with event organisers looking to get the bulk of the semi-finals and finals completed in what is expected to be prime early morning conditions. The kiteboarding component of Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnival will also kick off tomorrow (27 November), with contestants waiting for the strong North East wind expected to arrive at the south Coast around midday on Sunday 27 November.



Contest director Hugh Thompson said that “the conditions that greeted us at Scottburgh’s Main Beach were incredible, probably the best conditions that this event has seen over its nine year history. Thankfully we have a top quality field to take full advantage of what Mother Nature dished up, and the crowds soaking up the sun at Scottburgh’s Main Beach were treated to some great surfing. We are really excited about seeing some of South Africa’s top ocean athletes battling it out for South Coast Surf Carnival glory tomorrow”.

All roads lead to Scottburgh and the South Coast Surf Carnival

The heat is on as the competitors start heading for Scottburgh this week for the 9th edition of the  Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnivalwhich takes place on Saturday and Sunday. The pre registration evening takes place at Phatboyz Restaurant on Friday evening at 18h00. 


With all the surfers in the various disciplines  logged in it is now up to the ocean to deliver, Scottburgh is renowned for never dishing up the same wave and part of the thrill of this event is seeing what the ocean is doing on the day. The Longboarding and SUP surfing will take place at Main Beach , the Kitesurfers will be in front of Cutty Sark Hotel and the Waveski Surfers will be utilising Back beach which is behind the Wimpy.

There will also be a Surf Clinic on the day hosted by Mad Dog Surf Schools Shaun Selman and his trained staff, the surfing lessons are free.

Representatives from Sustainable Seas Trust (SST) will also be on hand collecting pledges from people, business and institutions who intend to increase their efforts at preserving our marine environments.

Back to the competition and once again it is a veritable who’s who of South African Surfing with top International pro tour surfers Brandon Jackson (Dbn) and Casey Grant (Scottburgh) geared up, not too mention South Africa’s hottest ladies surfing talent Sarah Baum (Athlone Park) defending her 2010 title, The SUP and Longboard premier divisions are wide open this year with any one of the talented surfers entering capable of winning the event. 

Favourites in the Open Longboard will be Jeep Team riders Dylan Macleod (EP) and Ross Lahana (WP) but with Brando and Casey in the mix it could be a major tussle, Brandon Jackson has over a decade of longboarding experience behind him despite concentrating on his WQS career he has never forgotten his roots in surfing which has always included longboarding.

Lyle Bottcher ,Rob Chrystal and Joshua Emanuel (Dbn North) will be battling it out in the Kitesurfing division but Dylan Frick (WP) will be the new kid on the block to look out for.

The Waveski division is another story all together with SA’s top talent entering and most of the entries are from out of KZN. This division is truly shaping up to be a major national event. This event is sanctioned by the SA Waveski and KZN Waveski Associations and is set to be a very important event on the Waveski calendar going forward. All in all the 2011 edition of the carnival is set to Rock Scottburgh.

“SNAP SHOT” photographic competition added to the South Coast Surf Carnival lineup

Here is another great inclusion to this year’s event. For all the freelance, amateur and happy weekend snappers who loyally grace the piers, beaches and contests taking photos of the surfers day in and day out, Jeep Apparel and Nerve Events have introduced a photographic competition to the South Coast Surf Carnival called  “SNAP SHOT”,

This competition is open to all and is free to enter, no entry forms, just the “SNAP SHOTs” sent to the electronic addresses set out in terms and conditions below.

All you need to do to take part is come down to the Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnival on the 26^th and 27^th November at Scottburgh Beach and take photos of the contest and the guys and girls in action, this puts you in line to win R 1000.00 worth of Jeep Apparel

Every year we are blessed to have photographers that come down to the event and share their photos with the competitors, the media and basically anybody who asks for a “shot” , this is our way of including the photographers into the Carnival. Like everything else we do at the Carnival this competition will become a regular feature at this event and hopefully grow as a competition in its own right

TERMS & CONDITIONS:

Only pictures taken at the SCSC 2011 event, will be considered.
These can be action and/or art. Entry limited to a maximum of 6 photo’s per person.
The Photos must be submitted via Twitter at @JeepApparelSA or email mw.nerve@mweb.co.za
Jeep Apparel & Nerve Events reserve the right to use these images
at no cost for future marketing purposes. The photographer will be given naming credit
on future use of photographs. Event takes place on 26 & 27 November in Scottburgh.
Entries open on 26 Nov and close on Friday 2 Dec 2011 at 1pm.
All entries will be added to a photo album on the Jeep Apparel Facebook page.
The Winner will be informed via email/twitter and the judges' decision is final.
The prize is a Jeep Apparel hamper valued at R1 000.
