Scottburgh Beach to Host Action Packed South Coast Surf Carnival

Scottburgh beach on the KZN south coast is set to host the ninth edition of the Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnival on November 26 and 27. The water sports festival has grown to include the KZN Waveski Open and will take place at Scottburgh Main Beach and Back Beach with the kiteboarders maximising the wind in front of the Cutty Sark Hotel.

The Carnival this year features Longboarding, Kiteboarding, Stand Up Paddle surfing and Waveski Surfing for men, women and juniors. The South Coast Surf Carnival will host free surfing clinics run by Sean Selman and his trained surfing instructors which will be open to all members of the public. Selman and his team will be on the main beach throughout the duration of the carnival to teach the basics to anyone who is keen to learn; all equipment is provided.

“Heading into year nine of this epic event is a major milestone for us as the organisers of the South Coast Surf Carnival. We are once again super stoked that we have been able to keep this important event on the calendar despite the current  economic climate. Hard work, creative thinking and dedicated sponsors who believe in what we are trying to achieve are the key ingredients in our recipe for success for this particular event,” commented event organiser Paul Godwin of Nerve Events.

Defending 2010 longboarding women’s champion and pro surfer Sarah Baum of Athlone Park has already thrown down the gauntlet for the women’s division after her fiery win at the recent SA Junior Surfing Champs held in Durban. The ladies event this year may be shaping up to be the biggest discipline surfed at this year’s carnival. Another top competitor to look out for will be Nikki Trickett (Morningside) who will be fresh from her international debut at a Longboarding event hosted in China later this month.

Ross Lahana (WP) and Dylan Macleod (EP) both Jeep Apparel Team riders are early entries into the Open Longboarding Division as is the President of the South African Longboard Surfing Association Brad Trickett (Morningside).

The addition of the Waveski surfing will attract top riders from all over the country to take part in the KZN Waveski Association Open event. Local Durban waterman Dean Bottcher who is at home on any water craft will be surfing this event on his “kayak” and will be one to watch.

The Jeep Apparel South Coast Surf Carnival is sponsored by Jeep Apparel and the valued support sponsors are Independent on Saturday, Thule, Red Bull Mobile,  Pick ‘n Pay, Phatboyz, Bilt Surfboards, Carling Black Label, Natural Curve Surfboards, Ocean 2 Air Kitesurfing, Maisch Fins, Nestle Pure Life Water, Island Style, Pro Class Wetsuits, Thermo Plastic Concepts & Equipment (TCE), MacSki. Glory for Baum, Smit, Armstrong on final day of Hurley SA Junior Champs

Graham Blows the last horn on the biggest and best SA Junior Champs

Sarah Baum, Josh Smit (both KZN Central) and Max Armstrong (Western Province) all made the most of the contestable conditions at Durban’s New Pier on Saturday, October 8 as they claimed victories and national titles in the under-17 Girls, U17 Boys and U15 Boys divisions respectively at the Hurley SA Junior Champs presented by Durban. Nine year old Kai Woolf (Eastern Province), the youngest competitor in the 150-strong field, signalled her arrival by confidently surfing her way to victory in the U13 Girls division, with Tahra Uren (Eastern Province) and Adin Masencamp (Boland) taking home the U15 Girls and U13 Boys titles respectively. In the overall points competition, Western Province claimed a narrow but deserved victory, having seen their surfers dominate proceedings consistently over the weeklong Surfing South Africa premier event. This is the first win by any Western Province team in Durban.

Finalists of this year’s Hurley SA Junior Champs awoke this morning to near perfect conditions at New Pier (Durban), with 2-3ft glassy lefts and rights making it an action-packed affair. Newly crowned SA U17 champion Sarah Baum made the most of her international experience dominating her division from start to finish. Josh Smit left it late in the U17 Boys final, snatching victory from Jarred Veldhuis (Eastern Province) with a big score in the dying minutes. Max Armstrong (Western Province) blitzed his way through the U15 Boys final, posting a 9-point wave that gave him an almost unassailable lead. As well as having earned themselves national titles, the U17 Girls, U17 Boys and U15 Boys champions were awarded their green Protea blazers and are automatically included in the SA Junior team that will compete in the ISA World Junior Championships in Panama next year.

In a closely fought U15 Girls final, Tahra Uren (Eastern Province) prevailed over Southern KZN duo Chanelle Botha (SKZN) and Courtney Ellish (SKZN). No small consolation for Botha was the fact that earlier in the event, she achieved a heat score of 19.15 out of a possible 20 and as the highest heat total during the Hurley SA Junior Champs, Botha’s near-perfect score positioned her atop the ‘I’m Off To Oz, Bru’ ratings. This score won the talented 14 year old a trip to the Australian Open of Surfing presented by Hurley and Billabong at Manley Beach in Australia next year.

A stoked Botha had this to say after being awarded the Hurley prize: “I am extremely excited; I really didn’t expect to win such an awesome prize or to be the one with the highest heat score! I really want to thank my brother Wade and the rest of the Southern KZN team for their support. I have never been overseas so haven’t been to Australia before and I cannot wait, it’s going to be really exciting being there for the Australian Open!”

One of the stories of the event was Kai Woolf’s victory in the U13 Girls division. Her style, confidence and consistency made her a worthy winner, and she looks like a great prospect.

In the lead-up to the U13 Boys final, Jordan Maree and Adin Masencamp had both enjoyed a number of heat victories, and it was fitting that these were the two battling it out for the title. Both surfers performed well in the final, but ultimately it was  Masencamp who held out over his close rival.

Western Province narrowly edged out hosts KZN Central in the overall points standings for the Freedom Cup. Having won eight consecutive team titles between 1996 (when Durban hosted the first SA Junior Championships) and 2003, the team from KZN Central came close to reclaiming the team title. However, current holders of the team title Western Province were fielding a strong team and were able to defend their title.

After a disappointing fourth place in the U17 Boys final, Mikey Venter (KZN Central) was still able to make his mark on the event by boosting a front-side no hands aerial into a 180 slide to take a victory in the Red Bull Air Show Expression Session and pocketed R5000 for his effort. For the first time ever, the Hurley SA Junior Champs featured the Surfing South Africa Tag Team competition which was won by Eastern Province.

Robin de Kock, General Manager of Surfing South Africa, commenting on the event said, "The Hurley SA Junior Championships was a huge success. There was some outstanding surfing in all of the divisions and so much talent that South African surfing looks set for the future. In 15 years of holding this event Surfing South Africa will use the success of the 2011 Hurley SA Junior Champs as a benchmark. We are privileged to be partners with Hurley and grateful to the city of Durban for supporting the event.”

According to Hurley SA Marketing Manager Liam Wood, ““Hurley is extremely proud with the outcome of this event. We are grateful for the support of all of the spectators, managers, individuals from Surfing South Africa, coaches and parents, as their hard work has contributed to the success of the event. We would especially like to congratulate all of the groms for their outstanding performances, we have been impressed by the standard of surfing and we are certain that the level of surfing will grow from strength to strength each year. Having committed to a 5 year programme supporting junior surfing in South Africa, we are super excited about where this event is going, and we remain committed to inspiring SA’s future champions.”
